The investigators with WCS's Mbeli Bai Study have been continuously monitoring western gorillas at this bai, or forest clearing, since February 1995. More than 350 gorillas have been studied here, providing unique insights into their behavior including the first observation of tool use by free-ranging gorillas.
The mission of the Mbeli Bai Study is to, "Enhance our knowledge of western gorillas and improve their conservation status in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park and elsewhere through applied research, national capacity building, international awareness raising and local community outreach programs" (Breuer, Mbeli Bai Annual Report 2008).
